Earlier this year, USF Libraries rolled out Digital Commons Data Repository @ USF (DCD), a new data platform that stores and shares datasets produced by University of South Florida researchers.

Overview

A data repository is a tool used to share and store data in varied forms, which can include survey data, media, spreadsheets, de-identified interview transcripts, etc. Many researchers deposit their data for collaboration and preservation. Additionally, more and more funding agencies and even some publishers require sharing research data openly, and a number of fields have common discipline-specific repositories. There are also generalist repositories that include data from all fields and various formats. The third category of repositories are institutional repositories, which are affiliated with the researcher’s academic institution.  Within the repositories themselves, there is also variation in the level of access, where the data access controlled to certain parties or to the public.

Here at USF Libraries, we have worked with bepress to provide a flexible online platform to support researchers’ data storage and sharing needs. We will help ensure that your data aligns with the FAIR principles, so that your data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

With DCD, you can:
  • Share your data with the world with a digital object identifier (DOI),
  • Increase your reach and impact through data citation and discoverability,
  • Protect access to your data through long-term archiving and preservation,
  • Prepare your data for open access,
  • Develop appropriate standardized metadata, and
  • Fulfill funder and/or journal publisher data sharing mandates

The DCD repository allows for a wide range of data types, including statistical, geospatial, textual, audio-visual, archival, and 3D data. Each file can be a maximum of 100GB, but you can create projects that include multiple files, which is particularly helpful if you are collaborating with other researchers or need to maintain different versions of your data. All currently affiliated members of USF can deposit data into DCD.
