Tomaro Taylor Promoted to University Librarian

The role of University Librarian is the pinnacle of a librarian’s career, an ascension to the highest level of faculty on a university campus. Tomaro Taylor’s accomplishments, efforts, and body of work have contributed substantially to the betterment of the USF Libraries and to the profession, and being named University Librarian is well deserved.

Summer 2019 in Special Collections

Special Collections is a unit within the USF Libraries that is, well, special. It houses rare and interesting books, photographs, music, and more. This summer, the Special Collections staff will be taking a holistic assessment of current collections and processing new ones. In order to do so, their hours will be adjusted for the summer only: Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., and by appointment.

The USF Libraries’ Digital Heritage & Humanities Collections (DHHC) initiative does substantial research in the field. One of their largest research projects is in partnership with Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where they are using the latest in 3D laser scanning and imaging to conserve and document Cape Canaveral’s invaluable space history. As the DHHC’s postdoctoral scholar, Dr. Christine Downs leads a series of geophysical surveys at historical cemeteries on Cape Canaveral.

SACS Appoints USF Libraries Dean for Library Accreditation Review

For higher education institutions, accreditation is crucial. In the U.S. southern states, SACSCOC is the recognized accrediting agency, with responsibility for carrying out the process. In Fall 2019, USF Libraries Dean Todd Chavez will be serving on the SACSCOC for library accreditation. He’ll be visiting two university libraries, reviewing each library’s resources, services, and staff to ensure sufficiency.

Preserving Heritage & Providing Open Access: A New Partnership in Preservation Brings 3D Leaders Together

The USF Libraries DHHC is partnering with two global leaders in 3D heritage documentation, CyArk and Historic Environment Scotland, to form the Open Heritage Alliance (OHA) and Open Heritage 3D, a repository of 3D digital heritage datasets. Their partnership is supported by Google Arts & Culture, who are transforming their projects into 3D interactive journeys, including the DHHC’s Apollo 1 Memorial at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
