New York Libraries have been fighting book bans across the country by lending 25,000 books to nonresidents since last spring. Brooklyn (N.Y.) Public Library has been particularly proactive with its Books Unbanned program, offering its e-books collection to young people ages 13-21 anywhere in the country. In Oklahoma, a QR code that links the Brooklyn site has become a “symbol of resistance” against the state’s ban on materials in their schools that might cause anyone to feel uncomfortable regarding issues of race or gender. Many teachers and students wear shirts and create lawn signs that promote the program with the barcode.
