At the USF Libraries we house a number of digitized and “born digital” material in our repository. Our collections cover a range of subjects including art, science, local Florida studies, and more, and we would like to highlight our digital newspaper archive of The Weekly Challenger. This newspaper, established in 1967, focuses on African American communities in St. Petersburg and the surrounding area. After partnering with the newspaper in 2013, the library began digitizing all existing print issues in 2016. Some issues have been lost, but David Shedden, St. Peterburg’s Head of Special Collections, has worked diligently to track down as many issues still here, scan, and compile them. You can learn more about this and locate past issues in the Weekly Challenger Research Guide, and check out the Weekly Challenger StoryMap that highlights a number of Weekly Challenger articles, videos, as well as links to other St. Petersburg African American Resources such as the Heritage Trail.
