The author of this post, T.R. Shankar Raman, makes some interesting points about the nature of the current publishing model that asks researchers to publish their research free of charge while the cost of accessing their journals is prohibitive. He charges Elsevier, Springer and others with predatory publishing practices that value profit over access. Certainly, academic libraries are facing some serious problems keeping up with the cost of subscribing to these journals, despite their value and prestige.
