Many reputable journals are costly and behind paywalls because, unlike some poor quality open access journals, one is paying for copy editing, indexing, and preservation. When you publish with a quality journal, you have a reasonable expectation that your article will be available and preserved for all time. That is not so with some poor quality or predatory open access journals. The article, “Open is Not Forever: A Study of Vanished Open Access Journals” traces 175 open access journals that vanished from the web between 2000-2019 and discusses the importance of continued access and preservation of scholarly knowledge.
