The USF Libraries Research and Instruction unit are delighted to welcome two new visiting faculty members: Brandi Jagars and Emily Norton. Both Brandi and Emily are already USF Libraries’ employees who have recently completed their Master’s in Library and Information Science.

As visiting faculty, Brandi and Emily will serve as subject liaisons to various colleges and academic departments: Brandi serving Psychology and the College of Community and Behavioral Sciences, and Emily with English, Communication, Linguistics, and the Honors College. Both will also serve on various Libraries’ groups and committees. As visiting faculty, they will be fully engaged librarians that will not be required to engage in research and scholarship, but will have a chance to experience all of the same tasks and projects as permanent faculty librarians. We hope this experience contributes to their professional development and provides a firm foundation for their continued career success.

Meet Brandi Jagars

For the past three years, Brandi has been a part of the Textbook Affordability Project (TAP) team, supporting student success at the USF Tampa Library. Brandi is excited to begin this new role and further her service to the USF community. She shared, “Imparting knowledge to diverse populations has often been a large component of my work history. Previously, I was a team leader and trainer for a facility that scored standardized tests. Before that, I was a general manager of a small business where I handled much of the onboarding orientation and position training. During my time in USF’s MLIS program, I found that I have an interest in teaching information literacy, especially regarding design of curricula with diverse and modern technologies.”

Brandi is currently pursuing a second Master’s in Learning Design and Technology, and is excited to utilize her educational experiences to face the challenges of this position and provide guidance and support to students and faculty.

Meet Emily Norton

Emily has worked as a Library Specialist at USF St. Petersburg’s Nelson Poynter Memorial Library (NPML) for the past two years. At NPML, Emily worked with the Research & Instruction librarians on a variety of projects, with an emphasis on undergraduate research and online instruction. She helped create the Canvas workshops for StoryMaps, Chicago Citation Style, Creating Research Poster Presentations, and Creating Virtual Research Presentations. She shared, “I assisted with an assessment of NPML Library’s webpage to assess diversity and inclusion to ensure our virtual library space is welcoming and accessible to all visitors. I also helped lead a workshop to introduce librarians to Wikipedia editing so that they could encourage their faculty to use Wikipedia to promote their own scholarship. I love editing Wikipedia in my spare time, with the goal of creating and editing pages to enhance marginalized voices and topics. I got involved with Digital Humanities and Digital Scholarship because I believe it’s a field that allows scholars to address and dismantle systems of power with the goal of creating a more equitable world, both virtually and reality.”

Emily also has her Master’s in English Literature from USF, and her specialties are in Digital Humanities, Online Learning, Digital Collections, and Scholarship. She is most excited about getting faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates engaged in research with our library collections, and finding new, innovative ways to deliver asynchronous library instruction.
