The USF Libraries are pleased to share that Emily Mann, Assistant Librarian at the USF Nelson Poynter Memorial Library (NPML), has been selected for the 2022 Inclusive Excellence Faculty Award from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at USF.
The Inclusive Excellence Awards recognize and celebrate those who have dedicated themselves to advancing DEI in their daily lives in ways that have transformed the lives of others, their units, or the broader USF community.
Emily was nominated by both Kaya van Beynen, Interim Campus Dean & Librarian at NPML on the St. Petersburg campus, and Jessica Szempruch, Assistant Librarian on the Sarasota-Manatee campus.
Kaya shared in her nomination, “Emily Mann’s DEI leadership ensures that USF Libraries’ diverse collections and services are used and integrated across the USF community.” Jessica shared, “Emily Mann truly embodies all elements of Inclusive Excellence…far more than a short word count will allow. Emily is a cheerleader and accomplice for all marginalized members of our university community. She unabashedly uses her voice to amplify the voices of others…, and approaches all of her DEI work with humility, continually striving to learn more.”
Since joining the Research & Instruction team on the St. Petersburg campus in 2019, Emily has dedicated herself towards diversity, equity, and inclusion by building collaborative partnerships across all three campuses and beyond. Emily is the founding Chair of the USF Libraries Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Under her leadership, the DEI Committee has promoted DEI library spaces, activities, and collections; created the Antiracist Reading List and purchased related e-books as the Black Lives Matter movement gained national prominence; co-created the Academic Freedom and the Inclusive & Equitable Classroom Guide; and organized an Antiracist Reading Group.
As an integral member of the 2021-22 Inclusive Pedagogy Faculty Learning Communities, Emily presented on DEI in Libraries and coordinated librarian-faculty partnerships to diversify the syllabi for 24 USF courses. For the St. Petersburg campus, Emily co-led the development of the Native American Land Acknowledgment in partnership with the Seminole Tribe. She is a member of USF St. Petersburg Campus Chancellor’s Advisory Diversity and Inclusion Committee (CADIC), the USF DEI Council, and has served on the USF Diversity and Inclusion Conference planning committee. She presents at local, state, and national conferences on DEI issues.
Together, these efforts represent Emily’s collaborative leadership and passion for partnering across departments, colleges, and campuses to advance DEI efforts for the entire USF community. We’re thrilled that she has been recognized for her dedication and great work—congratulations Emily!
