USF Libraries special collections presents…Join Florida Studies graduate student Marilyn Polson as she shares her ongoing research project to document the history of Hollinswood Ranch in Citrus County.

Founded in the 1940s as a cattle ranch by Dixie Hollins, Pinellas County educator and entrepreneur, the property has seen many changes over the intervening years.  By tracing the various industries that have impacted the property, one can also get a sense of Florida’s history: turpentine, cattle, mining, lumber, parks and preserves.

Major projects impinged on the ranch over time, such as the Florida Cross-Barge Canal, the Crystal River nuclear power plant, a Coast Guard base, and easements for public parks and recreation.  The ranch also became a focus of the Hollins family’s history, where countless hours were spent hunting, riding, entertaining, and working.

With the help of the Hollins Family Papers in Special Collections and oral histories with the Hollins family and their associates, Polson will tell the story of the ranch, the family, and the vital role of good stewardship of private property for Florida’s future.

Wednesday, April 26 @ 1pm in the Tampa library VIZ Lab (1st floor, to the left of the front desk).
