Did you see the radar reports showing birds trapped in the eyewalls of Hurricanes Helene and Milton? It’s mind-blowing to consider, right? But then you realize that peak migration for birds is mid-August to mid-October–the same as peak hurricane season here in Florida! So, what’s a bird to do?

The answer to such a question (and so many others) may be right here at USF Libraries. We have some incredible bird resources just waiting for researchers to explore. These include:

The Breeding Bird Atlas
Florida Audubon and Ornithological Collections
The Florida Ornithological Society Archives

We recently added the Searchable Ornithological Research Archive (SORA) to our collections. As detailed in this recent Digital Dialogs post, “SORA is a digital collection of important international ornithological journals. These academic journals, primarily focused on North and South American bird research, go back to the early 20th century! Originally housed with the University of New Mexico, the USF Libraries are carrying forward the important work of SORA. By working with journal editors, the USF Libraries are helping to make the journal content as current as possible.”

To the birds!
