Principles for the Use of Artificial Intelligence by the USF Libraries (DRAFT)
Definition
For the purposes of this document, artificial intelligence (AI) is a suite of technologies or tools including machine learning, deep learning, large language models, algorithms, and massive multimedia datasets aimed at reproducing human intelligence, perception, problem-solving, and the ability to create human-like processes and works.
Values
The USF Libraries embrace the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights and its interpretations regarding privacy and confidentiality. The USF Libraries also support the Guiding Principles for Artificial Intelligence shared by the Association of Research Libraries.
In alignment with these, the USF Libraries:
- Promote Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) to oversee critical decision-making and ensure accuracy.
- Advocate for inclusive access and democratization of AI tools to foster innovation in research and teaching.
- Foster AI literacy, including awareness of bias and ethical concerns.
- Commit to transparency, integrity, and reproducibility in AI-related research and processes.
- Prioritize the privacy, confidentiality, and safety of the USF community.
- Implement sustainable AI practices where possible.
Role of AI in the USF Libraries
In accordance with current USF academic regulations, the USF Libraries may utilize AI for:
- Supporting learning, research, and resource engagement.
- Enhancing resource access and discovery.
- Streamlining internal processes and improving operations.
- Advancing collection management and digital preservation.
