From humble beginnings in 1956, USF defied the usual timeline of graduated progress, choosing instead to emerge as a Preeminent University in a short 60 years. The Carnegie Foundation awarded USF the distinction of “Doctoral University with Highest Research Activity” (2.5 % of all universities have achieved this), the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society awarded a chapter to USF, and USF is 5th in the nation among public universities for granted U. S. patents. The University of South Florida’s accomplishments prove the caliber of its faculty, students and staff, and as Judy Genshaft stated in her 2017 speech, “we’re just getting started.”
