Help Us Celebrate the Public Domain in 2021

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Every year in January, the copyright protection of a new group of material will expire and become part of the public domain.  In 2019, the USF Libraries digitized 19 items from our collections to celebrate these materials becoming freely available to anyone to use and build upon.  In January 2020, the USF Libraries digitized 20 items.

Now, we need your help in deciding what 21 items with expiring copyright the USF Libraries will digitize from our collections in celebration of Public Domain 2021.  We have pulled a list of possible titles and matched them with the digital collection to which they will be added.

Tell us which ones you want scanned!  You can pick up to 21.

    1. Great question! And, opportunity for me to reveal a little of what goes on with our list before it gets to the voting stage. Our Public Domain digitization project first pulls a list of materials that, based on publication date, will be entering the public domain in the specified year. Sometimes the list is focused on special collections materials because those are usually more rare, but this is not always the case. The items on the list are then matched to existing digital collections in which they might fit and checked to verify that the publication date and future public domain status are correct. After this we look at how many libraries hold the title and give preference to materials are held by the least libraries. Our final check is to rule out titles that have already been digitized by anyone else. Jefferson and Hamilton: the struggle for democracy in America? has been digitized and added to the Internet Archive here: https://archive.org/details/jeffersonhamilto0000bowe/page/n5/mode/2up.
