Rebekah Brouillette is one of our student assistants for the Digital Scholarship Services (DSS) in the Tampa Library. She’ll be graduating with a Bachelor’s in Information Studies, specializing in Data Analytics!

HOW HAS THE LIBRARY CONTRIBUTED TOWARD YOUR ACADEMIC GOALS?

I began working with the library because of an interest in joining the Master’s of Library and Information Science program at USF. Working at the library always gave me the perfect environment to get my homework done. I still plan on enrolling in the future, but I am taking a break from school in order to take a job overseas.

HOW HAS WORKING AT THE LIBRARY AIDED IN YOUR CAREER GOALS?

I have learned so much from working with everyone at DSS. Working at the USF Library has shown me what it’s like to be part of a great work environment where everyone cares about you and encourages you to succeed. I have my direct supervisor, Paul “Alex” Onac, to thank specifically for the numerous letters of recommendation he has written for me.

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS IN YOUR CAREER?

I am planning on taking a job as an English teacher overseas. (I have my final interview on December 12. Unfortunately it is the same day as the commencement). As an English instructor and cultural ambassador, I will be sharing my knowledge of the English language and American culture in Japan.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE ON A SIMILAR PATH AS YOURS?

You can do it too! Whether it is working at the library or teaching overseas, you can do whatever you set your mind to.

HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING AND STUDYING VIRTUALLY? HOW DID YOU BALANCE THEM BOTH?

I definitely miss going into the library and seeing everyone at DSS, but I also feel really lucky that I have a job where it is possible to work remotely. My degree has been comprised mostly of online classes, so I am not new to online instruction. However, with everything else going on in the world, it has been much harder to get through this semester than previous semesters.

WHAT’S ONE SKILL OR FACT YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF OVER QUARANTINE?

I’ve started working out since quarantine started. It’s fun to move around every once in a while!

IF YOU WEREN’T SOCIAL-DISTANCING RIGHT NOW, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

If I wasn’t in quarantine right now I think I would be visiting places I haven’t been in a while like Disney Springs, the mall, or generally just seeing my friends more.

Congratulations on graduating, Rebekah! Thank you for your contributions to DSS and the Library. We wish you much success in your future! GO BULLS! 🤘
