At the beginning of February, USF in Lakeland Library Director Catherine Lavallée-Welch attended the Leadership Summit of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) in Dallas. The Summit is the occasion for the association’s unit leaders to conduct some association business and develop leadership skills. A new strategic agenda for the association was presented.
Lavallée-Welch also led the Board meeting of the Academic Division of SLA, of which she is Chair.
A visit was organized to the Sixth Floor Museum at Daley Plaza, which included an interesting tour of its Reading Room which gives access to the Museum’s primary and secondary materials about the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Diane Fulkerson, Social Sciences & Education Librarian at USF in Lakeland, attended the MidWinter conference of the American Library Association (ALA).
IGI-Global asked Diane to do a presentation at their booth on Saturday to discuss her current research that focuses on mobile technologies and social media.
She was also busy in governance, attending meetings from the ACRL Leadership Council, the Student Information Literacy Coordinating Committee and the Information Literacy Component Committee, of which Diane is chair. She also attended Caroline Kennedy’s keynote presentation about the importance of libraries.

Social Sciences & Education Librarian Diane Fulkerson recently sat on a panel at the 2012 Charleston Conference, in Charleston, SC.

Publisher IGI Global, who published Diane’s book, Remote Access Technologies for Library Collections: Tools for Library Users and Managers, invited her to present on a panel entitled ”It’s All About Connections: Utilizing Webinars and Online Learning to Enhance Education.” The co-presenters were Daniel Freeman from ALA TechSource and Lisa Carlucci Thomas, of Design Think Do and the moderator was Saeed Otufat-Shamsi of IGI Global.

Sonia Wade Lorenz, Library Assistant at the USF in Lakeland Library and USF SI graduate, recently presented a poster at the Society of Georgia Archivists annual conference in St. Simons Island.
Her poster is entitled “Before Photoshop” and explored photograph editing throughout history. Wade Lorenz also volunteers at the McKay Archives Center of Florida Southern College and her exploration of the topic started there with her work on the Florida Citrus Photographs Collection.

There were many efforts around the University of South Florida that support and contribute to this OA movement, including participation from USF in Lakeland Faculty and Staff. Business Librarian Lisa Zilinski was invited to present at the Data Curation Profiles Symposium organized by Purdue University Libraries on September 24th.
Purdue University Libraries’ Institute of Museum and Library Services funded grant, “Understanding Curation through the use of Data Curation Profiles” provided workshops in using the Profile to over 360 librarians. The goal of this project was to provide librarians with the knowledge, training and means to engage faculty in discussions about their research data, how they work with and manage their data, and their needs in organizing, sharing, publishing, or preserving this data. The symposium was a wrap-up of the research that went into the project. Practitioners talked about their experiences discussing and using the Profile.
Zilinski presented on the work she accomplished on data management plans for USF in Lakeland faculty, in collaboration with Library Assistant Sonia Wade Lorenz.

Lisa Zilinski, Business Librarian, went through training last week and received her certification for the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) instrument.
About 25 participants attended the training, from Florida, the US and around the world. The group included HR specialists, career specialists and educators.
Zilinski shared that the certification will have multiple uses around campus, including library instruction and information literacy.

Sonia Wade Lorenz, our evening and week-end Library Assistant, presented a poster last week at the Society of Florida Archivists Annual Conference in Sarasota.
Sonia, who is also a volunteer at the McKay Archives Center at Florida Southern College, showcased the Shirley Jackson Case collection she has been working on these past months.
This past Saturday, Sonia also graduated from the USF’s School of Information with a Master’s in Library and Information Science.
Kudos to Sonia on both accomplishments!

Social Sciences & Education Librarian Diane Fulkerson presented a session at the Annual Conference of the Florida Library Association, in Orlando.
With librarians from Saint Leo University, Florida Gulf Coast University and Florida State University, Diane co-presented a session entitled “Engaging Students in Information Literacy: The First Year and Beyond.” Diane shared how she developed information literacy activities using Google Scholar and Google Books linked to library resources.
The presentation and handout have been published in the conference’s proceedings.

Social Sciences & Education Librarian Diane Fulkerson presented today a session at the Library 2.011 Worldwide Virtual Conference. The Conference is taking place over three days, almost around the clock, via BlackBoard Collaborate. Presenters are from around the world.
Diane’s presentation was entitled “Multiliteracy is the new Information Literacy”. Some 60 attendees participated in the session.
