Semester Break Hours

The Library at USF in Lakeland will be closed Saturday May 4th and May 11th. We will be open May 6th through the 10th from 8am to 5pm. The Library will resume normal hours on May 13th.

Farewell to Laura Means

We are wishing a fond farewell to Library Assistant Laura Means, who will be leaving us April 30th. Laura accepted a job at the Polk State College’s library in Winter Haven.

We’ll miss her quiet efficiency and her awesome talent at design.

New display on National Teacher Day

May 7th is the National Teacher Day so the Library thought of honoring our teachers, our student teachers and all their colleagues in this new display.

Don’t forget to give a teacher some love on May 7th. The National Education Association suggests to update your social media to thank a teacher, for example, by changing your Facebook status to thank a teacher who made a difference in your life. Or, by sending appreciation messages on Twitter and using the #thankateacher hashtag.

The majority of the books on display can be checked out.

New display on Spring Training

For the 77th consecutive season, the Detroit Tigers are in Lakeland for major league baseball’s spring training in the Grapefruit League. Come see what we have in our collections, on spring training and the mighty Tigers.

Farewell to Sonia Wade Lorenz

We will be bidding a fond farewell to Library Assistant Sonia Wade Lorenz next week. Sonia accepted a job as an archivist for the federal government in Washington, DC. Sonia started in Lakeland as a student worker almost two years ago and graduated with a MLIS from USF in 2012.

Lavallée-Welch attends the Leadership Summit of SLA

At the beginning of February, USF in Lakeland Library Director Catherine Lavallée-Welch attended the Leadership Summit of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) in Dallas. The Summit is the occasion for the association’s unit leaders to conduct some association business and develop leadership skills. A new strategic agenda for the association was presented.

Lavallée-Welch also led the Board meeting of the Academic Division of SLA, of which she is Chair.

A visit was organized to the Sixth Floor Museum at Daley Plaza, which included an interesting tour of its Reading Room which gives access to the Museum’s primary and secondary materials about the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Until Saturday, you can pick up any of the wrapped books in our display. Check it out and unwrap it at the Front Desk for a surprise! To note, all the books are related to Black History Month which makes it even better!

Fulkerson appointed to important national task force on information literacy

Diane Fulkerson, Social Sciences & Education Librarian, has officially been appointed to the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education Task Force, of the Association for College & Research Library (ACRL.)

Created by Steven Bell, president of ACRL, this important task force will revise the Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education. The current standards will be rescinded and new standards will be developed to reflect learning in the 21st century with the diverse sources of information available to students.

Diane is the current Chair of the ACRL Information Literacy Standards Committee. Among other things, this committee creates subject specific information literacy standards.

Display on Black History Month

Our Black History Month display shows books about African-American history and culture. Information about freedom quilts, used by the Underground Railroad as a secret code for fugitive slaves, is also available.
