Statistics/Math tutoring now available

Tom Ricard, a math and statistics tutor, is now available to help students either as walk-in basis or by appointment.

The tutor will be available Tuesday and Thursday, from 2 to 7PM, in the Group Study area of the Library. You can just come in or make an appointment with Mr. Ricard at tricard@poly.usf.edu.

This new service is offered by Student Affairs and Student Government, thank you!

RefWorks 2.0 is here!

Beginning this week, RefWorks, the web based citation manager, is changing its look.

While the interface will be new, all of your citations will still be available. RefWorks 2.0 will retain its power and functionality but with a new look and abilities that further enhance the user experience. Although you will be presented with the new interface, for the rest of 2011 you may switch back to Classic RefWorks whenever you like. Look for the RefWorks Classic link in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. You can toggle back and forth between the two interfaces.

RefWorks 2.0 is all the best of Classic, but streamlined with a clean, intuitive design that’s:

  • Simple – with key functions via new buttons, navigation toolbars, action icons, light boxes, and collapsible menus with one-click features and support resources at the user’s fingertips
  • Powerful – with the ability to quickly view full references and share information with colleagues or researchers anywhere, whether they are RefWorks users or not
  • Loved – by all levels of users – from undergrads using it to create simple bibliographies to advanced users such as faculty members and researchers for presentations, writing articles, or seeking to get their work published

Please note that Write-N-Cite and RefGrab-It are not available with the 2.0 interface but the classic versions work seamlessly with the rest of 2.0. RefWorks will be completing those features later this year.

New service: UBorrow

UBorrow allows you to request materials directly from participating libraries within Florida’s state university system. This unmediated borrowing service increases your access to the collections of the other universities in Florida and delivers more quickly than standard interlibrary loan.

How does it work?

If you’re searching the USF catalog for a title and the USF Library system does not own the book, click on the blue UBorrow link towards the top right corner. This will take you to the State University Libraries’ catalog, showing all the available items within the university system. Click on the UBorrow icon again to request the item and you will find a login box where you will be asked to put in your Library ID (the 205 number on your USF ID card) and the month/date of your birthday. Then select where you want to pick up your book. You will receive an email in a few days letting you know that your book is ready for you.

You can also start your search directly into the State University Libraries’ catalog.

Requests for items that aren’t available in Florida will be transferred into an ILLiad (or regular interlibrary loan) request automatically.

What is the loan period?

You are given 30 days from the time the item arrives on campus (this will take a few days so plan ahead!) Again, you’ll receive an email as soon as your book is received and ready for pickup.

Can I renew my loan?

You may request one renewal for materials borrowed through Uborrow. Please note, this is a request, so you will want to place your request several days before your item is due. After you place your request, you will receive an email notifying you of the new due date or that your request was denied. Request renewals the same way as for USF items.

What happens if my books are overdue?

You will receive email notifications about your overdue UBorrow books just as you do for the books that you borrow from the USF Libraries. You will also be fined by the USF Libraries for all overdue, lost, and damaged UBorrow loans.

UBorrow is available today, give it a try!

Library catalog update – some functions unavailable this week-end

UPDATE: All user functions have been restablished

Starting Friday, July 22nd, at 6PM, some user-driven functions in the USF Libraries catalog will not be available due to a software upgrade.

These functions will be unavailable:

  • Viewing of your user record
  • Self-renewals of checked out books
  • Holds and recalls of books checked out by another user
  • Email receipts if you return a book
  • UBorrow requests
  • You will be able to continue searching the catalog, the databases and electronic journals. You should not see a big difference in the catalog interface once the upgrade is done, except for some new functions.

    The new software version should be up and functional Monday, July 25th, in the early work hours. We’ll put an update on the USFP Library’s Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/usfplib), Twitter profile (@usfplib) and this blog entry when these functions are available again.

Changes to “Find it @USF” – now easier to use

To facilitate linking to full-text resources, the USF Libraries have moved to a simplified version of the “Find it @USF” screen (aka SFX screen) on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. This is the screen that permits to open the full-text of a journal article, for example, from one of our article databases.

This change is based on user feedback. We hope that you will find this new version helpful in conducting your research.

Changes include:
• Less clutter
• Larger font that is easier to read
• Removing the citation boxes
• Replacing the GO button with links
• Icons for the type of resources

ILL suspended during break

Interlibrary loan will offer restricted services during most of Winter break (December 11 — January 3). Loan requests will be limited to USF inter-campus transfers only.

For items outside the USF system, we cannot hold a backlog of requests during the entire intersession so we’re asking that you hold back on requests altogether until January 3rd. If you would like assistance or have any questions, feel free to contact the Library.

Computers under maintenance

The computers in the Library and Open Use Lab are currently being replaced by newer, faster models. We have already received new, bigger monitors. Not all of the machines are available yet. This includes the public access computer and the micro-form reader/scanner.

Please excuse the noise and the inconvenience. We think it will be worth it!

New, longer opening hours

Thanks to funding provided by SGA, the Library and Open Use Computer Lab have new, extended hours starting today, September 13.

Week of 9/13/2010
Monday-Thursday
8:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Week of 9/20/2010
(and for the duration of the Fall semester)
Monday-Thursday
8:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Other days’ schedule remains the same. This is for the duration of the Fall semester. If utilization and funding is there we may continue in the Spring semester.

ILLiad maintenance and downtime

The interlibrary loan system, ILLiad, will be down today, September 7, for a period of one hour, sometimes between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM. The web pages and clients will be unavailable.

Please plan your ILL requests accordingly.

Longer loan period for undergrads

The loan period has been extended to 4 weeks for books from the circulating collection. It had been 3 weeks previously for undergraduate students.
